What are the disadvantages of COB LED strips?
  1. Color consistency issues:
    This is due to differences in the manufacturing process between COB LED strips and SMD LED strips. SMD LED strips involve sorting and binning LED chips to ensure color consistency on a single strip. In contrast, COB LED strips apply phosphor directly onto the chips on the PCB, skipping the binning step, which can lead to less uniform color.
  2. Lower power output:
    Because COB LED strips have denser chips, heat dissipation is a challenge. Their maximum power is generally around 14W per meter, while SMD LED strips, which use chips with heat-dissipating brackets, can reach up to 18W per meter.
  3. Lower luminous efficiency:
    Currently, COB LED strips have a maximum luminous efficiency of around 120LM/W. SMD LED strips with high-power chips can achieve 160-170LM/W. For applications requiring more than 120LM/W, SMD LED strips are preferable.
  4. Higher failure rate in waterproof applications:
    The flip-chip design of COB LED strips tends to have a higher defect rate in waterproof configurations compared to SMD LED strips.
