Why do LED strips experience voltage drop?

Typically, low-voltage LED strips require power injection every 5 meters. This is because voltage drop occurs along the strip, and without additional power, the brightness at the end of the strip will be lower than at the beginning. As we know:
Current × Voltage = Power.
When power remains constant, a higher voltage results in a lower current. Current is like a flowing river—it gradually decreases the longer it travels, which causes inconsistent brightness along the strip.

How to detect voltage drop?

Power the strip from one end, then fold the end of the strip back to the start—you’ll clearly see a difference in brightness. Especially with white light, this can even result in a visible change in color due to the difference in intensity.

What factors affect voltage drop?

Wire Length: The longer the wire from the power supply to the strip, the greater the voltage drop—especially in addressable RGB strips.
Wire Gauge: Options like 16AWG, 18AWG, 20AWG, 22AWG, 24AWG, 26AWG, 28AWG, 30AWG. Thicker wires allow more current to pass, reducing voltage drop.
PCB Thickness: The amount of copper on the PCB affects how easily current flows. Thicker copper (e.g., 2OZ, 3OZ, 4OZ) reduces voltage drop.
Circuit Design: There are constant current and constant voltage designs. Constant current strips maintain stable current throughout the strip, ensuring consistent brightness from start to end.

Which is better: 48V or 24V LED strips?

Technically, only 110V or 220V strips are called high-voltage and are not safe to touch. Strips with 5V, 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V are considered low-voltage and are much safer.
24V is more popular than 12V, and 48V is gaining more preference than 24V. Why? Because with higher voltage, current is lower, voltage drop is smaller, and you can power longer lengths from a single end—making installation easier and reducing labor costs.

What is the longest LED strip?
